The Impact of Touch Starvation
Introduction:
I recalled these two conversations, which I wanted to share with you.
"When your husband dies, you stop getting touched with love. Each touch held our life's dreams and hopes, the challenges we faced together and the battles we won, moments of passion, and the loving chemistry we maintained. His touch was different on so many levels." (widow, 77)
The lady concerned had lost her husband some years earlier, despite a loving family, with grandchildren and friends – she really wanted this feeling once more.
"How dare they tell me when I have grieved enough. She was the only woman I ever loved. If she was here right now, she would say, 'Give it away, I don't need it now.' Letting go brought me to a better place." (widower, 83)
This gentleman, a proud, independent chap was fuming when his family had tried to get him to let go of some of his late wife’s clothing. He confided to me that he had been keeping it as he could stroke it when he missed her, he could sleep with her housecoat, it turned out he missed her touch and was using the clothing to try and keep it. He did let some things go, and kept a few back.
When I delved deeper into the subject of ‘touch starvation’ I was able to see the depth at which it affects us all. I hope this article does one thing… it reminds you to reach out and touch people that are important in your life…
My research came up with this
The year 2022 brought a surge in discussions about an often-overlooked aspect of human well-being—touch. The concept of touch starvation, a condition resulting from the lack of physical contact, garnered significant attention due to the prevailing social distancing norms and limitations on physical interactions. Addressing the profound impact of touch deprivation on mental and physical health, this report delves into key findings and insights related to touch starvation in the UK in 2022.
Report Highlights:
Impact on Mental Health:
Studies have underscored the critical role of touch in nurturing emotional well-being. The absence of physical contact can exacerbate feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. According to a survey conducted by the UK Mental Health Foundation, 45% of respondents reported increased feelings of isolation and emotional distress due to the lack of physical touch during the pandemic.
Physical Health Implications:
Beyond its psychological effects, touch has tangible benefits for physical health. The British Journal of Psychology highlights that touch stimulates the release of oxytocin, a hormone linked to stress reduction and improved immune function. With reduced opportunities for physical contact, individuals may experience heightened stress levels and compromised immune responses, as noted by a collaborative study between leading UK health institutions.
Conclusion:
As we reflect on the implications of touch starvation, it is imperative to recognize the significance of physical connection in fostering holistic well-being. Strategies that promote safe and appropriate touch, while adhering to public health guidelines, can play a pivotal role in mitigating the adverse effects of touch deprivation.
